Gen Eight Games is an independent, Indigenous-run game studio based in Tkaronto, Canada. We were founded in 2024 to develop Where Nations Gather, a powwow management and rhythm game. Thanks to recently secured funding, we are focused on building our first playable demo. This is where you come in. About the role
As a Gameplay / UI Programmer, you will work closely in a fully remote environment with the art and design teams to implement and integrate UI screens and menus in Unity, while collaborating with the Technical Director to create and maintain robust gameplay solutions.
This a part-time contract position for entry level programmers. If you are a freelancer, are still in school (or just graduated), or have your own hustle on the side, this position may be for you. We are looking for someone who can follow code design conventions, independently solve problems, and fearlessly ask questions when stuck.
Due to the nature of our funding, we can only accept candidates who are legally eligible to work and currently resides in Canada. Unfortunately, we cannot make any exceptions.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with designers and artists to turn UI and gameplay requirements into polished, fully functional features.
- Implement and maintain UI screens, menus & other in-game interfaces in Unity.
- Test, troubleshoot & debug gameplay and UI systems.
- Write clean, well-organized, and maintainable C# code following established project conventions.
- Collaborate with Technical Director to review code, solve technical problems, and improve existing systems.
Requirements
- 1–3 years of programming experience (professional, academic, or personal projects).
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or a portfolio demonstrating 1–2 completed games.
- Foundational knowledge of C# and Unity and a solid understanding of object-oriented programming (OOP).
- Ability to write clean, maintainable, and well-organized code.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the judgement to ask for help when needed.
Nice to have
- Experience building UI systems (menus, HUDs, etc…) with Unity UI Toolkit, NoesisGUI, or a similar framework.
- Shipped a personal or team project
- Experience using Git or another version control system
- Demonstrated ability to utilize Unity and IDE debugging tools.
